Gross domestic savings are calculated as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) less total consumption spending.  (GDP is the market value of all goods and services produced in the U.S. in a year.)  This chart shows the percentage of GDP that is not consumed in spending.  The downward trend indicates that we are consistently saving less of what we produce.
