View National Debt $ trillions (hover mouse over graphs to view details)
This chart shows the total US Debt (national debt) in trillions of dollars. The national debt consists of two parts:
- Intra-governmental debt is money the government borrows from federal trust funds, such as the social security trust fund, to help fund current operations.
- Public Debt is money the government borrows from entities not part of the federal government, such as individuals, companies, other governments, or the Federal Reserve System.
As evident in the graphs, the debt has been rapidly rising and now stands in excess of $16 trillion, which is approximately $50,000 per person.
